Robert W.D. Ball, who served in two wars and was involved in the first U.S. hydrogen bomb tests in the Pacific Islands, died Aug. 21. He was 83. Born in Hartford in 1930, Ball grew up in West Hartford and attended Mount Hermon School in Mount Hermon, Mass. Ball's wife, Joanne Dubbs Ball, described her husband as having a "fervor of patriotism."
