03/20/12 UConn women set defensive mark

Bria Hartley scored 13 of her 16 points in the first half and Connecticut held Kansas State to an NCAA tournament record low for points in a 72-26 second-round rout Monday night in Bridgeport, Conn.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis added 15 points and Kiah Stokes had a career-high 13 for top-seeded UConn (31-4).

It's the 19th straight season that UConn has made it to the round of 16.

Eighth-seeded Kansas State (20-14) was trying to make it that far for the first time since 2002. The Wildcats were no match for the Huskies, and were unable to surpass the 27 points that Southern scored against Duke in 2006.

Brittany Chambers scored 11 points to lead the Wildcats, who went 11 minutes in the first half without a point.

After taking a 3-2 lead 34 seconds in, the Wildcats missed 18 straight shots over the next 11:17. By the time Jalana Childs put back a miss, they trailed, 19-5, with 8:09 left. They never could recover.

Connecticut freshman Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had a stellar NCAA tournament debut.

Mosqueda-Lewis scored 21 points to help top-seeded UConn beat Prairie View A&M, 83-47, on Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA women’s tournament in Bridgeport, Conn. She matched the school record set by Jamelle Elliott in 1993 for points by a Huskies player in her first tournament game.

“I know Coach Jamelle. She’s awesome,” Mosqueda-Lewis said. “She recruited me while I was in high school and to share this with her and to know her personally is really awesome.”

UConn coach Geno Auriemma was expecting his phone to light up with messages from Elliott, a longtime assistant with the Huskies before leaving to coach Cincinnati. He was impressed by Mosqueda-Lewis’ play.

“She’s pretty efficient with her shots,” Auriemma said. “She doesn’t need a lot of shots and that’s one thing that maybe helps her score a lot of points quickly. She takes advantage of the opportunities she gets.”....
