Richard Lapointe, a mentally impaired dishwasher incarcerated for 26 years based on a suspect murder confession, appeared closer than ever to leaving prison Tuesday after state prosecutors agreed not to oppose his release. Events suggesting that release could be imminent - something once unthinkable - were set in motion last week when the state Supreme Court excoriated the means by which his confession was extracted and ordered that he be released or given a new trial.
