Brownfield breaks an imperative

In former manufacturing centers like Bridgeport, the landscape is littered with the empty hulks of old factories, many of them sitting on ground contaminated by the decades of chemical leakage from the process of making things. Brownfields, these sites are called, and they are redevelopment-resistant, given the expense of cleaning or capping the soil, removing elements like asbestos from the buildings, and making the place safe for human activity.
