Given the tumult that's enveloped Bridgeport's public school system for the last three years, it's quite a testament to the beleaguered teacher corps that they have apparently kept their focus and been able to carry out their important work. Of the 1,555 teachers employed by the school district, 1,096 -- that's 70 percent -- were determined to be "proficient" by measure of a still-controversial evaluation system that factors in student performance.
