Native American Addresses West Hartford's Indian Mascot Controversy

Christopher Newell, a Native American educator, challenged the notion that Indian mascots honor native culture at a forum discussion Tuesday. "I can report from personal experiences that it does affect the self-esteem of young Native Americans in a negative way," said Newell, who grew up on a Passamaquoddy tribal reservation in eastern Maine before attending Dartmouth College .
