State auditors are investigating a whistleblower complaint charging that Secretary of the State Denise Merrill confirmed a politically connected Bridgeport man to become a notary public despite his history as a drug dealer. The anonymous complaint, first reported by The Hartford Courant, was confirmed Thursday by Robert M. Ward, one of the two state auditors.
