Cardinal Edward Egan, a native of Illinois with the most distinctive of baritone voices, died today of a heart attack after lunch at the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in New York (not far from the offices of Pope John Paul II had appointed him bishop of Bridgeport, Conn., and he was appointed to New York in 2000 after the death of Cardinal John O'Connor. He would serve as cardinal archbishop through 2009.
